The spot market price of wafer-level polysilicon has risen by more than 20%

Recently, the spot market price of wafer-level polysilicon has continued to rise, rising more than 20% from the beginning of this year to US$36-37/kg. However, the industry said that wafer makers will not be affected by the price increase because they have signed long-term contracts with polysilicon suppliers.

The DigiTimes quoted the above-mentioned sources as saying that silicon wafer manufacturers including Universal Crystal, Formosa Plastics and Hejing pointed out that despite short-term fluctuations in spot market prices, until the end of 2021 or the first quarter of 2022, the contract will not be renewed. The polysilicon price set in the supply agreement will remain unchanged.

However, international polysilicon wafer suppliers are likely to raise their quotations in 2022, prompting wafer suppliers to raise prices for wafers of different sizes, thereby passing on some of the cost increase to foundries.

It is worth mentioning that Chinese suppliers of PV-grade polysilicon have sharply increased prices to $30 per kilogram from less than $10 per kilogram in early 2021, and sources believe that the unusually sharp rise in prices may be the result of market manipulation or hoarding.
