The latest research report released by Strategy Analytics pointed out that global smart speaker sales reached 146.9 million units in 2019, a record high and an increase of 70% over 2018. Amazon remains the leading brand, but its market share fell from 33.7% in 2018 to 26.2% in 2019. Google maintained its second spot with a 20.3 percent market share, also down from 25.9 percent in 2018. Chinese vendors Baidu, Alibaba and Xiaomi all increased their market share, while Apple came in sixth with a 4.7 percent market share.
Global smart speaker sales also hit an all-time high in Q4 2019, reaching 55.7 million units, the highest quarterly sales ever. This was due to strong Christmas season sales in the US and Europe, as well as new product launches, improved component supply and strong promotions driving a recovery in Google’s smart speaker business. Despite the recent supply and demand disruptions caused by the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak, Strategy Analytics expects smart speaker sales to hit another record in 2020.
David Watkins, Director at Strategy Analytics, said: “Consumer demand for smart speakers did not abate in the all-important fourth quarter, with improved features and higher audio performance from new smart speakers driving record quarterly sales. Google, Consumers around the world are once again attracted to incredible promotions by leading brands such as Amazon, Baidu and Alibaba; especially Google’s enhanced giveaway promotions in partnership with brands such as YouTube and Spotify.”
David Mercer, Vice President at Strategy Analytics, added: “In 2019, Amazon and Google maintained solid leadership positions in North America and Europe, where they accounted for more than three-quarters of all smart speaker sales. Both market shares declined slightly, confirming our user research findings – buyers are prepared to buy other brands. Competitors must focus resources on specific smart speaker customer segments and use cases to maximize revenue and profits.”
