Brazil’s new synchrotron radiation source Sirius uses Pfeiffer Vacuum products

Shanghai, February 22, 2021 – Sirius is not only the brightest star in the night sky, but also the name of this new source of synchrotron radiation in Brazil. It was one of the first fourth-generation synchrotron radiation sources to be built in the world, and the most complex scientific research facility ever built in Brazil – a facility that conducts cutting-edge scientific research and contributes to global issues in areas such as health, agriculture, energy and the environment Find a strategic infrastructure for solutions.

The new laboratory is located at the Brazilian National Center for Energy and Materials Research (CNPEM) in Campinas, São Paulo. The Brazilian Synchrotron Light Source Laboratory (LNLS), in cooperation with CNPEM, has over 23 years of experience in the field of synchrotron radiation sources and has been hosting this successful project since 2008.

“The reliable quality of Pfeiffer Vacuum’s products, combined with the excellent support from the company’s Brazilian agency (AVACO), ensured that the beamline construction ran smoothly and reliably. During this process, vacuum generation was the key to making the experiment possible.” Gustavo Lorencini MP Rodrigues said. He is the Scientific Instrumentation Supervisor and is responsible for providing many of the engineering services required for the operation and development of the Beam Transport Technologies facilities (beam transport systems and laboratories).

A key factor in high-end particle accelerators is the vacuum. Using a clean and reliable vacuum pump is the key to ensuring and maintaining ultra-high vacuum cleanliness. Pfeiffer Vacuum, with the support of its Brazilian representative (Avaco Tecnologia em Vácuo), supplied several ACP series multistage Roots pumps, HiPace turbomolecular pumps, helium leak detectors and custom vacuum chambers.

For front-end mounting and test lines, Sirius chose HiPace turbomolecular pumps known for their superior quality and reliability. A multi-stage Roots pump in combination with a turbomolecular pump ensures a clean vacuum free of hydrocarbons or particles.

The MANACÁ Beamline was Sirius’ first operational research station. It is used to study protein crystal structures. Using an X-ray diffractometer, this beamline can detect structural details of biomolecules such as viral proteins. These studies may provide a reference for the development of novel coronavirus specific drugs. Over the next few months, the Manaca beamline will take a very institutional approach to tackling this subject.
